Principal's Letter August 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great excitement that I find myself ready to start another school year at IES Årsta with you and our students. After a year with my young family I have a newfound appreciation of being a parent that I bring back to the role of Principal at IES Årsta. Firstly, I’d like to thank Ms Gavin for a job well done and for her excellent leadership of IES Årsta through what has been a turbulent 2020. As we stand at the start of our 2020/21 school year we continue to live in different circumstances and uncertain times. Our role as a school and what Ms Gavin and our team was able to provide last term remains the same - the stability of a calm environment and a place of learning with high expectations. That will continue to be our mission for our students despite what happens around us.

School Goals 2020/21

Now in our fourth year as a fully grown IES school we are now 768 students and 75 members of staff.  We continue to strive to be better and focus on the feedback from you as parents and in particular the students to identify areas of improvement. We will always continue to focus on delivering the IES ethos which we promised to you when you chose us; a calm and safe learning environment, bilingualism and high expectations. However, beyond that, from the feedback you and the students provided on our annual surveys there are three areas we identified to focus on this year. We want 100% of our students to feel safe at our school and our student care team and mentors will continue to work hard to ensure this happens. We want all students to be challenged in class by quality teaching and to work to improve themselves in all their subjects. And we also want our students to be heard. Which means our existing house system will be implementing a new student leadership structure and giving our students more opportunities to work with us to develop our school. For 2020/21 we want our students to feel safe, be challenged and be heard at IES Årsta. We look forward to working with you towards these goals throughout the year.

New Staff

As we grow so does our team. We have now appointed two new staff members to our school leadership team. First, our current Head of SO Ms Kadric is now our new Academic Coordinator who will work with Ms Legersjö to develop the quality of our teaching and ensure high expectations for students. Secondly, I am pleased to report Mr Foster will stay with us as Student Care Coordinator, working with Ms Gavin to strengthen our student care team. We welcome Ms Mack from IES Jönköping as our new Head of Science as well as Ms Giordano and Mr Toma to our Science team. Ms Brady will be our new HoD Aesthetics while Ms Hancock is on parental leave, and we also welcome Ms Hansen to our Aesthetics team. We welcome Ms Rook, Ms Crum and Ms Anderson to strengthen our Math team as well as Ms Ward and Mr Ospino to our English/MFL team. Ms Lamke will be our new SYV,  Ms Sutton will be joining Junior Club, and Mr Bond and Mr Mouchtaris will be new additions to the student care team.

Class Mixing

Just a reminder that we are mixing the classes and we do not take preferences from the students or parents. It is decided by the student care team. We ask that you respect this process. We also ask that you along with us support them through this process of change. Change is something that we all have to encounter in our lives and we strongly believe that this class mixing policy develops resilience in the students themselves and also bonds the entire year group together for the betterment of our school community.

Given the recommendations from the Swedish public health agency, we continue with the adjustments we implemented during the spring term for Covid-19. This includes, virtual parent meetings instead of physical parent meetings at school, students staying home when sick, regular washing of hands for students throughout the school day and before lunch, increased distancing and hand sanitiser in the lunchroom as well as reduced large gatherings of students inside. We ask that we work together to ensure we follow these measures as a school community for the greater good.

Virtual Open House & Mentor Meeting

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions we will be holding a virtual open house and mentor meeting this August. Please reserve the date of Wednesday 19 August from 15.40-18.30 to ensure you can join the live stream together with your child. The expectation is you sit down with your child and watch the live stream while logged in to your child’s school google account. This is an opportunity to discuss our school with your child and meet your child’s teachers, mentors and the school leadership.  Attendance is compulsory. Further detailed instructions will be posted on Schoolsoft.
